Soft Spot.

Warning: Lengthy Post, Cocktails Encouraged.

You've already seen that much of my wardrobe (these days the entirety of it) comes from the thrift but I haven't talked much about my house yet. I have one little corner of my living room somewhat completed & decided to share.

Now when it comes to thrifting for your home it all depends on your particular taste. My personal taste is somewhere in the cozy, worn in, traveled, boho mix. None of my stuff really matches but it all comes together & manages to work somehow. Or at least that's what I'm telling myself (and also trying to convince my boyfriend of.) I'm no interior decorator but, my hope is when people walk into my house they feel a sense of warmth & curiosity. And hopefully they don't walk out covered in dog hair as I normally do.

Thrifted IKEA sofa (w/new IKEA cover), IKEA white down pillows, thrifted Suzani pillow, Morrocan wedding blanket (gift from Gramma), thrifted (but brand new!) Pottery Barn curtains, wool blanket from our trip to Iceland, thrifted art & art from my trip to Paris

Thrifted assorted figurines, thrifted Eygiptian perfume bottles (gift from Mom), thrifted cermanic elephant, thrifted tassel (on lampshade-use these tassels all around my house), custom built table (matching pair flanking both sides)

Elephant table from Ross (my mom passed one of these up at the Goodwill like a ding dong & when she went back it was gone...bitter bitter tears were shed), IKEA cowhide, thrifted gold mirror, thrifted vase holding sunflowers, thrifted art

Thrifted Indonesian shelves (a recent score for $5.99 a piece), my entirely thrifted elephant collection (minus one from Kev's Mom) & thrifted matryoshka collection, thrifted French poster

As you can see I am a professional hoarder. For me, personally, I am more comfortable in a room with multiple layers. Sometimes I think I'd like to get rid of it all & go minimal but then I remind myself that I don't know the meaning of the word. My home is not perfect, it has it's wrinkles & stains, but that's just the way life really is now isn't it? A place to curl up with your dog & boyfriend to eat Thai pizza & watch the Walking Dead. I hope you guys enjoyed this little peak into my home. I hope to eventually share the other side of the room but I have a behemoth of a coffee table to strip & re-paint so it might be awhile. And by awhile I mean if you can hold your breath that long have someone call Guinness World Records for you. And also call a priest & an exorcist thereafter. Xo.

Thrifting Tip: Home Edition - Living Room

A home is a such a personal thing that it's hard to give tips on it in a way. It's the place that should best express you & your family. And there are SO many ways & tastes to decorate a home all of which you can certainly find at a thrift, whether you like eclectic, modern, country, you name it. So I will just give a few tips I use for my own home.

1. Throw Pillows

If I could give you one tip to follow, have it be this one. Do NOT buy polyester or micro fiber (anything & everything) throw pillows. I am extremely against this. These pillows tend to be stiff, very square, & look flat. Down pillows, which can be purchased for about $6-$8 from IKEA have more fullness to them & are inviting on a sofa or chair. Like you just want to give it a hug! With buying the down pillow inserts you can then find awesome covers from the thrift. The Suzani one from above I recently picked up at the thrift. I also have a beautiful silk one with zebras on it, & another vintage one from Chinatown in San Fran w/pink fringe. Pillow covers are cheap from the thrift & you can easily change them out whenever your mood changes.

2. Silk Tassels

I have silk tassels hanging on some of my lamps right off the switch. After you've had a few drinks at night & are fumbling about trying to find the switch to turn off the lamp, the tassel tells you right where it is as it's hanging from it. And it just adds a really fun touch & can make it your own. You can find tassels in the thrift hanging in little plastic bags on the wall generally where other trimmings for sewing are. And yes I did just confess to making my life easier to turn off lamps after a few drinks. You'll thank me later.

3. Vases

Never buy a vase full price. You can pick up vases for 99 cents to a couple of dollars. And nothing is more welcoming in a room than fresh flowers.

4. Candles

Candles are expensive, even at a thrift they can be. I recommend stocking up the next time you are at IKEA as their prices are fair. Then purchase your candles holders from the thrift. Over the past few years brass has become more popular so you will notice the price is reflected at the thrift for brass candlesticks. I will now only buy those if they are on the right coloured tag day. With that said you can still get so many beautiful candle holders for a great price. I have ones made from wood, glass, volcanic ash, & silver. Just like flowers, candles make a home.

5. Picture Frames

Don't buy picture frames at full price ever. Thrift stores & places like T.J. Maxx are great for this. I have pictures all over my home sharing Kevin's & my first year together. It reminds me of how far we've come since we were 16.
